Meeting Authors Michelle Hodkin, Myra McEntire, Beth Revis and Victoria Schwab or MY DAY ROCKED! HOW WAS YOURS?

Beth Revis and Myra McEntire
Here's why my day ROCKED!
It didn't matter that I was late.  It didn't matter that my son had to get another cast which means three more weeks of trying to keep him off that foot.  It didn't matter that I had a teenager that did not want to be with me.  I got to meet four awesome authors! That's right! And my teenager changed his mind after he met them.  Decided maybe he'd like to give this reading thing a chance.  Listening to me talk to them and hearing little snippets about their books, made it sound not so bad!

Victoria Schwab and Michelle Hodkin
So who did I see?  Up there in the left hand corner is Beth Revis of Across the Universe fame and beside her is Myra McEntire of Hourglass fame!  And if you recall my Hourglass review, I said I felt lost in the first half but the second half redeemed it.  I'm going to clear up some things in another review.   And also I met Victoria Schwab of the newly released The Near Witch and Michelle Hodkin of the yet to be but highly anticipated The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer.  So they ran the gamut from published in January to yet to be published.  But they also ran the gamut in terms of publishing experience.  I may be the only one just now reading Across the Universe but it's awesome!  And to me it's just flawless and I always think the author sat down and wrote it from page one to the end from day to day.  But not so!
I took notes. (I know talk about geek!) Beth Revis was/is a teacher. I didn't notice if she used the past tense or not, but she has ten, yes ten unpublished novels, before she reached this magical creation of Across the Universe!  So everyone out there struggling don't give up!  Because you know the ravings going on about Across the Universe!  And at the other end of the spectrum is Michelle Hodkin who just sat down after an encounter with a mom and her daughter and wrote a story imagining their situation.  I'm not saying exactly what she said because I don't know if she wants that kept quiet or what, but the origins of the story she wrote are eerie.  But she submitted her book to a contest that just happened to be judged by an agent. She won and the agent told her to submit it.  First book, no thoughts ever of being a writer, she was a lawyer!  But, they do write a lot.  And Myra, I didn't catch how many books she'd submitted I was more interested in the fact that she thinks she's never done with her story.  Even after she turns it in.  And all of the writers agreed.  But Myra says she turned book two in and said she apologized to her publisher.  Then took a step back.  And cleaned.  All of them clean when they need a break from writing or need to clear their minds.  I think I need to focus more on my writing, because I'm still not unpacked.  Or I need to live closer to one of them so they can come clean my house!  But Myra cleaned for a month!  And then she said she figured out how to fix what needed to  be fixed and she did and everything's fine now so we can all sigh with relief because book two will be coming.  However, she did say something about "If" she sells book three so make sure you buy book two because this story needs to be finished!!  And then Victoria's story was that she had a novel before The Near Witch that had 19 out of 20 people behind it in the publishing house.  But apparently, in publishing, it's got to be 100 percent.  So that one person kept her book from being published.

It was incredible to have that much creativity in the room and I felt so awed to be able to speak to them (all hundreds of years younger than me!) and it inspired me to come home and continue my efforts at writing.  Victoria Schwab said she starts with one sentence, a prompt, a question, just a sentence and goes from there.

If you get a chance to hear these authors on the ASH 2 NASH tour, I promise you, you will not be disappointed!  Definitely pick up their books and get them signed and make sure you get your tickets put in the basket for the door prize!  Myra McEntire has posters and pins!!
And they were all so gracious, they met with my two boys and talked to them and signed my 11 yr old's brand new cast!  Pictures below!
"You Rock!" Beth Revis wrote on my son's cast.  Myra McEntire drew an arrow and wrote, "Yes you do!"

He'll still have this cast when school starts. It's middle school. Maybe he'll find some fans!

Then Victoria Schwab wrote
"Rock On!"

And Michelle Hodkin asked
"What will you believe?"
And so I give you my own awesome ASH 2 NASH giveaway!
A signed copy of :
Across the UniverseHourglassThe Near Witch

And no, there was a copy of Mara Dyer there with Michelle Hodkin, but she was watching it pretty closely and I thought I could probably get my teenager to grab it and run, but the kid in the cast would slow me down and I'd already said my name several times and my blog name especially to Michelle.  Besides, I'd rather be friends with the authors and just wait another month and a half.  It comes out on my birthday!  Oh, the give away!  Just a simple comment giveaway!

Tell me if you've been to a book signing and who it was and which book you'd like to win!  Please leave a way for me to contact you an email address is preferable.  You can still enter if you've never attended a book signing.  Just tell me that!  This contest will end on August 12th one week from today!  Oh, and it's US only but my Sept. giveaway is International and it'll be good! Oh and it'd be nice if you're a follower, but you don't have to!

Happy Reading!

  1. Woah...

I just KNOW you had a awesome time. Youre fan girl excitement was tangible! :D

Laughs! That's awesome how they all signed your son's cast. I bet there are some girls at his new school that will get all excited about it. Btw, I LOVE the color green (does my blog give it away? XD) so that cast is outstanding!

Hmm, well I've only been to one book signing this year, ironically it was my first book signing, too. Got to meet and great with Ellen Hopkins and chit chat about the army life with Cassandra Clare! So much fun. Do author book signings outside of the Ash 2 Nash tour count? :3

So happy you had a great time meeting all the authors! It sounded like it was a blast! :D

  2. I have never been to a book signing before but I've been searching all over the place for one near me. Sadly there are none soon. Hopefully some time in the near future I will be able to go to one. I would looooveee to win Hourglass. I heard it was amazing. I'm glad you had fun at the signing :)

    New follower :)

  3. I would love to go to a book signing. It would be so fun. But sadly I have never been to one. There aren't really any in or around my town. Wish there was. Thanks for the awesome giveaway. My preference would be The Near Witch

  4. I would LOVE to win Hourglass! I want that book so bad! I had an ARC but I gave it away (it's a long story) and I WANT! I loved it! I wouldn't mind The Near Witch, I just have the ARC and a finished copy sure would be nice. I have Across the Universe already ;)
    Thanks so much Heather!
I know that every time I go to a signing I start having inspiration to write again. They all talk about how hard it was to get published, but they did it!
I'm not sure if you already saw but I was at a signing with 6 authors last weekend. I have video of the whole thing up on my blog. Sorry if you already commented. I've been getting lots of comments today so I don't remember.

  5. Unfortunately I've never been to a book signing! It must be tons of fun and I really hope to go some day in the future. Thanks for holding this giveaway! I've heard Hourglass is amazing, so I'd definitely want to get my hands on a copy! :)

  6. Thanks for this awesome giveaway, and what an amazing group of authors. I went to my very first signing this year for Maggie Stiefvaters Forever release. It was amazing.

i would like to win across the universe.

  7. The most recent book signing I've been to is Maggie Stiefvater's Forever tour. Tessa Gratton was with her also. Maggie's very funny & I had a really great time.

Thanks for the giveaway! I'd love to win either Hourglass or The Near Witch.

  8. unfortunately I haven't but hopefully I will someday attend a signing!

PS love your sons Green cast (Yay For Green)

  9. The only book signing that I have been to was Ron Rash where he was talking about his book Saints at the River (a fantastic book)! I almost had a chance to go to the one that you went to but I had some last minute things that really needed to be taken care of :(!
I would love to win Across the Universe!

  12. I've been to a few book signings, and they've run the gamut from YA to adult, mostly through the LA Times Festival of Books (in April each year), but I think one of my favorite was from last year's Festival of Books with Melissa de la Cruz, Heather Brewer, Michelle Read, and others. They were just so awesome and patient and wonderful. <3

I've been railing against fate for not being able to meet them out here on the west coast. You lucky thing!

I'd love to win Mara Dyer. Seriously dying to read it, and I've read the others mentioned here - they definitely are amazing, and I'm definitely putting all of the sequels on the wishlist.

    Thank you! :3

Thanks for the amazing giveaway. My email address is in my profile!

  16. Wow! Didn't expect so many of you to respond already!! That's great!

Usagi- I don't have The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer. So, you'll have to pick another book if your number comes up.

Please spread the word! And with Hourglass I have a pin that goes with the book! And like all of the authors, Myra was so nice.

  17. I have never been to an author signing, but I've had my eye on the Ash to Nash schedule. At five hours Nashville is the closest to me, but I have to work that night. :( One day I'll make it to a signing, and it will be awesome.

Would love to win Across the Universe.

    Thanks for the awesome giveaway.

  18. Thanks for the awesome giveaway! You are lucky to have been to meet those authors :)

My first book signing was actually this June! It was with Maureen Johnson, Sarah Mlynowski and Sara Shepard. Sara Shepard is my favorite author and I went because of her, but before I went I bought some of Maureen & Sarah's books, because I'd never heard of them or their books before. I read them and loved them! :) It was so fun!

I don't mind which book I win (if I do), they all seem great! But if I have to choose, I'll choose The Near Witch!

    Thanks again!

  19. I was able to attend the National Council for Teachers of English last year and had an awesome time getting author signatures! David Levithan, Rachel Cohn, and Ellen Wittlinger all signed copies of their books for me!! It was awesome!!!

  28. Thanks for everyone entering! Keep 'em coming!

And this ASH2NASH tour was exactly about not being near a big city and doing book signings for smaller towns. I know Nashville is big, but the other cities aren't. Hopefully other authors will catch on!

I found a great source for book signings is Book Tour under Events on Good Reads. Found a Melissa Marr, Kelly Armstrong etc. the authors of Enthralled near me. Don't know if the book will be out yet?? But I've got plenty of MM books to get signed and a Jennifer Estep book, thanks to Touch of Frost.

I wish I had signed books for all of you! But I have a lot more giveaways coming up.

    Happy Reading!

  29. Awesome giveaway! I've been to a lot of book signings when I used to live in NYC for college. I think I've seen Cassandra Clare the most!!

  31. Ah I don't know which one I want more. Maybe Near Witch? They all sound good :)
I've been to a few book signings in Houston - for Charlaine Harris, Kim Harrison, Patricia Briggs, and Amber Benson. They were all awesome! It's so great to meet an author and get to ask questions and get a book autographed.

  32. Wow! This looked like it was so much fun. I've never been to a book signing. :( I live in KY and I honestly haven't seen any book signings anywhere near me. Thanks so much for the chance to win!

  43. I went to a signing with Jacqueline Carey!

    I would love Hourglass!

  44. Wow, what a fun signing you got to go to! So jealous of your son's cast :D

I've been to a couple of signings, but my most recent had four authors there: Nova Ren Suma, Holly Goldberg Sloan, Suzanne Young, and Cindy Pon. It was a lot of fun, and some great bloggers were there too!

Thanks so much for the giveaway, and I would love to win Across The Universe.

  45. Oh wow, that sounds so exciting! I love how you related all the authors' different experiences. It's so nice to see that there are so many different paths to the same end. I'm so glad you got to go! Thanks for the laughs, too. I was picturing your teen swiping the book and then you and your youngest trying to run away :P

Please enter me in the giveaway, too! imagesandwords at optonline dot net Thank you! :)

  46. Small- Yes, I kept thinking about it, but I really think that given the fact the "limpy" is more adept at hopping on one foot than using the crutches he'd have slowed us down. And as I said, she was watching it pretty closely. Kept glancing over at it while we were talking. Last thing I wanted to do was tick them off they were so cool!
And it was so cool that they were all at a different point in the publishing timeline.

I want to thank everyone for entering. I'm entering numbers in random org and will be posting winners soon!

This is an AWARD FREE BLOG. Thank you for understanding.
While I appreciate it, I just don't have the time to respond to them.
