Challenges for 2013

I am doing the usual Goodreads Challenge but I've set the bar a little lower at 100 and I'm determined to read a little slower and not make myself crazy with obligations.

I am also doing this great challenge that I found at Reading the Paranormal and On a Book Bender

2013 Reading Challenge: Seriously Series

General Overview

How serious about series are you? We'll find out in 2013.

In the summer of 2012, Amanda and I hosted an informal challenge that focused on completing books in series that we owned. It was enough of a success that we decided we wanted to turn it into a year-long challenge--with a few minor changes. To start with, we have expanded on our original challenge by including both ongoing series and adding new-to-us series, as well as an option for series rereads for those that are VERY serious about their series (or for those that just like to go back and reread old favorites).

Definitions

For this challenge, we define a series as a collection of two or more books that belong together and where the second book is published before the end of 2013. This is a pretty broad definition of series, and it includes traditional series like the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, less traditional series like Stephanie Perkins's YA contemps (Anna and the French Kiss, Lola and the Boy Next Door), and shorter series, like Kendare Blake's Anna series (Anna Dressed in Blood, Girl of Nightmares).

A series is considered complete in one of two ways: either as finishing all the books that you own in the series or as obtaining and reading all the books that have been published in the series to date. Because we don't want this challenge to become a financial burden, how you choose to define completion is left to your discretion.

How It Works

To allow for the greatest level of flexibility, we've separated series into three categories: series started before 2013, series started in 2013, and series rereads. Series started before 2013 are defined as series that you have started reading before Jan. 2013 and that you still have unread books to get current in (or finish) the series. Series started in 2013 are defined as any series that you start reading between Jan. and Dec. 2013, and the second book in the series must be published before December 2013. A series reread is defined as books that are part of a series that were read before Jan. 2013 and that are reread between Jan. 2013 and Dec. 2013. A series reread does NOT have to include the full series.

For each category, there are different levels of seriousness about series that you can choose. Semi-serious is reading 1 to 6 series, seriously serious is reading 7 to 12 series, super seriously serious is reading 13 to 18 series, and seriously spectacular series star is reading more than 18 series. What this ends up looking like is this:

series started before 2013series started in 2013series rereads
Semi-Serious1-6 series1-61-6
Seriously Serious7-127-127-12
Super Seriously Serious13-1813-1813-18
Seriously Spectacular Series Star18+18+18+
You choose which categories you want to attempt and which level to shoot for. Reading novellas and short stories from a series does count here.

Goals and Progress

Want to sign up? Create a post or page about this challenge, what goals you would like to accomplish, and then link up your post at Reading the Paranormal. I will be hosting all of the linkies for this challenge. In addition to the sign up, every three months, we will post a check-in, where you can report your progress and reassess your original goals. That schedule will look like the following:
  • April 1st: January--March
  • July 1st: April--June
  • October 1st: July--September
  • January 1st, 2014: October--December
I have so many series that I've started but have that final book to read so this is a great challenge for me.
I'm going for the Seriously Serious level with the option to move up. I don't think I'll be re-reading anything.

Then just for my own sake I am going to try to do what I'll call From the shelf Fridays. It means I will read a book that is already on my shelf by January 1st 2013. I'm working on making lists for these, but I'm just too damn tired tonight.

Here are some series that I need to start and/or finish:
Mortal Instruments Cassandra Clare
The Hush Hush series, I need to read Finale Becca Fitzpatrick
The Fallen series, I need to read Rapture Lauren Kate
The 13 Blue Envelopes Series by Maureen Johnson
The Shadow Falls Series by C C Hunter I've only read Born at Midnight but have almost all of them
Beautiful Creatures series by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl I need a couple still
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins I've read The Hunger Games
13 to Life series by Shannon Delany I've read the first one
The Gemma Doyle series by Libba Brary
Ashfall and Ashen Winter by Mike Mullin
The Iron Druid series by Kevin Hearne
The Mindjack Series by Susan Kaye Quinn
The Buttterfly Novels by Denise Deegan
The Songs of Magic Series by JL Bryan
The Jenny Pox Series by JL Bryan
Chained Reaction Series
Artemis Fowl Series by Eoin Colfer need to read The Atlantis Complex and The Last Guardian
Alex Rider series by Anthony Horowitz need to read Scorpia Rising
Immortal Beloved Series by Cate Tiernan
Glimmerglass Series by Jenna Black

And so many others but that's a good start!

I'm also going to do a MG reading challenge if I can find one. And I'm going to get a new look! Sometime!

So, that's my New Year Goals!! And I'm going to be cleaning off my shelves this year. So I'll be doing reviews and giveaways. I have a hard time letting things go, but I'm going to try to be real with myself about whether I really love the book enough to keep it. You guys might have to encourage me.

Let me know if you know of any great challenges!

Heather

  1. Even though you are cutting back 100 is still so ambitious. As much as you read, I know you'll make it. Other than the Goodreads Challenge, I didn't officially join any challenges this year. I did consider the Seriously Series Challenge that you are doing, but this year I want to focus on reviewing more. I read a ton, but don't review a whole lot. And in 2013 that is going to change.

Good luck on your challenges! I'll be checking back and comment more frequently (another goal for 2013). Talk to you soon!

    1. Did you join this one? Maybe it would help you. I'm hoping it will help me.

  3. I wasn't going to do any challenges other then the goodreads one (200 books) but I REALLY need to get caught up on series. So I decided to do this one. Good luck with it! I think I need to commit to try to read two books a week that I already own and at least one of them needs to be from a series, usually it'll probably be both though. I just have SO many books I own to read!

    1. This is the only official challenge I joined and I know I'll complete it because I want to finish these series. So it's a no brainer. I know you get a lot of books to read because you read all genres. I'm being really particular about what I ask for this year.

  5. I didn't even sign up for challenges this year because I sucked at keeping up on them. I see some great series up there. Kevin Hearne is my fav I hope you love it!

    1. Heidi, the only challenge I was in last year, the person running it just stopped blogging and so though I completed my challenge there was no one to tell. So I thought this one was a pretty sure bet since two people were running it. I've seen a lot of people quit blogging over the last year.

  6. Great list! I'm doing this one too and I keep adding to my list. I could go on forever, so I decided to start with the base level and if I finish those, then I can move on. :)

    1. I could do the highest it's just that when I get to the end of a series, I don't want it to end so I don't read the last book.
I've never finished the Harry Potter series for that reason.
      (bows head in shame)

  8. Wow, so many challenges. I think last year I said I was going to try to do some this year (since I'm done with school), but at times reading and blogging as been a chore in the midst of everything else. So for me to stay stress free, I think I am going to remain with only the one challenge this year, the Goodreads one to read a certain number of books in the year. Now I don't even remember how many I said I would read, but I'll get there. :) Good luck on all of yours!

This is an AWARD FREE BLOG. Thank you for understanding.
While I appreciate it, I just don't have the time to respond to them.
