The Faerie Guardian (Creepy Hollow 1)
An A to Z of Creepy Hollow Fae
From Goodreads-Guardian trainee Violet Fairdale is just weeks away from one of the most important occasions of her life: graduation. After messing up big time by bringing a human into the fae realm, Vi needs to step up her game and forget about Nate if she hopes to graduate as the top guardian of her year. Everything would be fine if she wasn’t forced to partner with Ryn, her ex-friend, ex-enemy, current ‘sort of friend’. They might be trying to patch up their relationship, but does she really want to spend a week undercover with him for their final assignment? On top of that, the possibly insane Unseelie Prince is still on the loose, free to ‘collect’ as many specially talented faeries as he can find—and Vi is still at the top of his list. Add in faerie queens, enchanted storms, complicated not-just-friends feelings, and a murder within the Guild itself, and graduation is about to become the least of Vi’s problems.
So you've read my rave reviews of Rachel Morgan's short serials that were coming out monthly- I loved them! She combined them into one novel, The Faerie Guardian (Creepy Hollow 1). The Faerie Prince is the second book, book I said, not serial. It's a full length novel. If I had to guess I'd say 350 pages at least. And there is nothing wasted on those pages.
Of course, we'll start with the characters. Violet or Vy or V. is a bad ass guardian in training. Her parents are both dead and she lives alone with her pet that shape shifts into anything from a bear to a pig to a cat. She can probably count the number of her friends on one hand and one of them is her mentor who she lived with after her father was killed when she was fourteen. But when she came of age, she moved into her own tree to live by herself. Yep, tree. We'll get to that in the world part. V. has made a few mistakes in the past (Faerie Guardian) and she's trying to make up for them now. She accidentally led a human back into the Faerie Paths and dated him. Doesn't look good for a girl who is trying to be valedictorian (or number one ass kicker) in Guardian School. V. pretends that she's not lonely, or that being alone is okay, but the truth is, she was betrayed by the human and she's lonely, hurt and has no one to go to.
Then there's Oryn or Ryn. Ryn, his brother Reed and V. all used to be best friends. Then Reed died and Ryn and V. have been enemies since then. Until they go on a rescue mission. And they decide to try to put the past behind them. Ryn is known for hanging out with Undergrounders, people that hang out in the Labyrinth and do not like faeries and he doesn't spend much time with his fellow guardians either. He can probably count even less friends than V. He's rude to the girls and makes fun of the guys in a condescending way. He clearly wants to be left alone.
Tora is V.'s mentor and part of the Guild political workings. She's like V.'s mother and sister. Tora scolds her and reassures her in the same breath. She tries to crack V.'s hard exterior, but it's next to impossible. I'd want Tora in my corner.
Zell- Ultimate bad guy. He's the Unseelie Prince and he's after V. She has an unusual gift and he's collecting faeries with unusual gifts. He also has a special metal that makes a faerie's magic useless. V. has experienced it on more than one occasion.
Nate- The human boy V. brought into the Faerie Paths. He turned out to be a Halfling, his mother is a faerie. But he does something unforgivable and breaks V.'s heart and trust.
The World- This is my favorite part! We get to visit the regular world and see fantastic houses and how faeries see into our world without us knowing. But Creepy Hollow, the "city" where Ryn and V. are from is fascinating. V. lives in a tree but you couldn't tell it from the outside. You must be invited in to enter her house. She has a waterfall in her bathing pond, no bathtub for her. And a grassy bank to sit on with flowers.
And magic is so useful- they all have a stylus that they can just draw a door even in midair and disappear through. I'd love to do that. No more running late for me! The Guild has a really high ceiling when you enter with a glass dome and you can tell by the color if the protective charms are working. There are magic mirrors that run around on their tiny legs and call your name if someone is trying to get in touch with you until you answer and instead of iPhones, you have an Amber. OH, and this is the best part. You can stuff your bags as full as you want because you can shrink them down to so tiny they fit in the compartment in V.'s boot! No luggage fees nasty airlines!! Oh, and there's this special tree...well you should probably just read about it.
The story- Wow, I was not expecting this at all. The first book was kind of setting things up. Showing the animosity between Ryn and Vi and their competitiveness. Showing discovering Nate and who he was. But let me tell you, this book is a game changer right from the start. I knew Ryn and V. would have to do their assignment together, it was a given as much as they can't stand each other. But I didn't expect what happened on their assignment or anything else that happened, right until the very last sentence. I was "Holy Cow" this and "No Way" that all through the book. This book has a huge impact on the story and I wasn't prepared.
So now I'm begging Rachel, P-L-E-A-S-E- give me a copy of the next novel as soon as you write it because that ending was killing me! There were so many unbelievable things that happened, Good and Bad, but the end, well, heartbreaking in the most complete way. Rachel won't tell me if I'm right or wrong about my guesses about what happened or will happen so I need someone to talk about this with, NOW! But you have to read Faerie Guardian first. It's only 99 cents right now. Go ahead, you know you want to and what's 99 cents when I promise you it's a great story! Then you can get this one and we can discuss it! Okay??
Somebody email me. I need to talk about the ending!!
I highly recommend this series to lovers of YA fantasy, faeries, and romance. Oh, and did I say that V. kicks butt on monsters that try to hurt humans? That's how she met Nate. There are a lot of action scenes. Oh and this romantic scene, oh... it's so sweet. It will melt the coldest of hearts. Read it!!!
